SEWA Bharat and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have partnered to investigate the relationship between social enterprises and women’s economic empowerment. BMGF is working with SEWA on developing proofs of concept of their models of social enterprises with women, creating a learning hub within SEWA to learn, and disseminating lessons on the SEWA approach to women’s empowerment and livelihoods. The project hopes to answer a series of questions, including but not limited to: which of SEWA’s different models of collective enterprises work well, and what kinds of effects do they generate? Do they successfully combine economic viability and women’s empowerment? Which models can be scaled or further replicated? What can we learn about the viability of collective enterprises across sizes, geographies, models and sectors?
