Context:

Self Employed Women’s Association is a movement of women who work in the informal economy. Its aim is to work towards the cause of women’s empowerment, through a twin approach of struggle and development. All women who join the movement become members of India’s largest women’s trade union, with current membership of 1.5 million.

SEWA encourages its members to work towards their economic empowerment by collectivizing and forming social enterprises. Over four decades, this has given rise to over 140 social enterprises across six sectors. Whether cooperatives, producer companies or private limited companies, all are in need of different forms of capital (grants, equity, debt). So far, SEWA has setup a Mutual Benefit Trust to enable some forms of capital and now wants to setup a Core Investment Company as the second pillar of its Investment Group.
